THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME ALONE

Some words for this new day–

Jesus says, ‘Go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place” (Matt 6:6).

Henri Nouwen, the Catholic priest, professor, and writer, has some centering words for us who claim to be followers of Jesus–but get so deeply distracted and sucked into this culture–

“Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life.” (pause button–is this true?  I think so)

“Solitude begins with a time and place for God–and Him alone.”  (in the quiet, before others rise, before all the distractions of news and discourse crowd our lives)

“If we really believe not only that God exists but also that He is actively present in our lives,” (I believe the first–am I convinced of the second?)

“–healing, teaching, and guiding” (and I would add, opening doors, closing unhelpful ones, lifting me, focusing my heart, centering my life, giving me my bearings)

“–then we need to set aside a time and space to give Him our undivided attention.”
